For those who don’t know, CERT-IN is a nodal agency under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It deals with cybersecurity threats like phishing and hacking.
What’s the warning
The government body has highlighted that it has found multiple vulnerabilities in Google Chrome “which could be exploited by an attacker to bypass security restriction, execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service condition on the targeted system”.
Users that are affected
As per the report, the issues have been found with the version prior to Chrome 107. Also, these vulnerabilities have affected users on Mac, Linux and Windows devices.
Why the warning
CERT-In has warned users that upon exploitation of these vulnerabilities, attackers can bypass security systems and also execute arbitrary code and cause denial of service condition on targeted system.
These vulnerabilities, the agency says, exist in Google Chrome, “due to Heap buffer overflow in Vulkan; Use after free in Layout, Extensions, Accessibility & Feedback service on Chrome OS”. “Insufficient data validation in File System & Extensions and Inappropriate implementation in Full screen mode; Type Confusion in V8, it further adds.”
What users can do
The agency has advised users to apply appropriate patch and Google has recently rolled out the Chrome 107 update. Which means, updating the web browser to its latest version will solve the problem.
