Google Genesis: Google tests “Genesis,” an AI tool that can write news articles – Times of India

Google has another AI tool in the works, and this one can write news articles like the one you are reading. The tool, named “Genesis,” which can generate news articles, is being pitched to news organisations.
Sources told The New York Times that Genesis has the ability to create written content using data provided to it, regardless of the topic, be it current events or other forms of information.
The New York Times is one of the news organisations that has been shown a demonstration of this tool, apart from the executives of News Corp., the organisation that owns The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, according to the sources.
According to a source familiar with the tool, Google has the belief that it could function as a personal assistant for journalists. By automating certain tasks, it could allow them more time to focus on other responsibilities.
“Not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists,” Google spokesperson on Genesis
Google views this as a responsible tool that could prevent the publishing industry from facing the challenges of generative AI However, the people who saw the tool think otherwise.
Google spokeswoman Jenn Crider in a statement to the Times said that the company is considering offering AI-powered tools to assist journalists in their work, particularly for smaller publishers. However, she emphasised that these tools are not meant to replace journalists’ important role in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles. Instead, the tools could offer alternative options for headlines and writing styles.
Several executives who witnessed Google’s presentation found the tool “unsettling.”. Two sources revealed that the presentation seemed to ignore the hard work and dedication that goes into creating precise and well-crafted news articles.
It is not the first time that news organisations have tried to embrace AI. In recent months, some organisations have come under flak for AI-written articles, which were said to be full of errors and mistakes, and those publications had to issue a public apology.
Associated Press has used AI to write articles about corporate earnings reports but still relies on human journalists. They have partnered with OpenAI for access to generative AI technology but have yet to share their plans for using it.
For now, Google’s Genesis remains in testing, so it is to be seen if it has the potential to become journalists’ aid, what Google intends it to be, or if it will be a minefield.
