google: Google brings illustrations to redesign your Gmail avatar – Times of India

Don’t want to use your photos as a profile picture for your Google account? If yes, then try Google illustrations. The tech giant has introduced customisable images that can be used as profile pictures. The newly introduced Google illustrations comprise of different images from various cultures, interests and backgrounds.
“Some prefer a photo of themselves, others might select a pet, and there are those who choose an object that might show a hobby or causes they support. But for some people, there isn’t an option that’s a good fit for them…To give everyone more safe, creative and personalized options for profile pictures, we are introducing new Google Illustrations” writes Google in a blog post announcing the Google illustrations.
The addition will give users a choice over the current default profile picture which simply shows the first letter of the user’s name in a coloured background. At present, users can also choose avatars- a stylized representation of what a user looks like.
Currently, the illustrations are available for Android users only. Google says that it is working on the feature for Android and web users as well.
Here’s how Android users can use Google illustration as a profile picture

In the blog post, Google has shared a GIF depicting steps to use illustrations as profile pictures for Google accounts. Here are the steps

  • Open Gmail app on Android phone
  • Click on the Profile picture in the top right corner of the app
  • Choose the account you want to change the profile picture for (in case you are adding more than one Gmail account in the app). Tap on it
  • Here, tap on ‘Add profile picture’. Here, you will see Google’s newly introduced illustrations. You can choose one as per your choice
  • You can also customise the illustration by changing the colour or background of the image
