Google Home app is getting this automation feature earlier than expected – Times of India

Earlier this month, Google announced that the Home app is getting a makeover. This new layout aims to help users personalise their connected devices, actions and, importantly, automations to let them easily control their smart home. At that time, the tech giant said that the new features, which include triggering a Google Assistant routine using a device, will be available for Public Preview. It looks like this feature is now available for some users but with the old Google Home design.
What are Google Assistant routines
Google Assistant routine is a service wherein the company’s virtual AI-powered assistant helps you control smart devices such as lights, doorbells, switches and other electronics on the basis of certain commands that you have set on the Google Home app. To carry out tasks, the assistant takes into account various factors such as voice commands or device triggers.

Device Triggers
Google explains that device triggers are automation triggers that are tied to a specific device and an event or state change.
For example, you can set a voice command-based routine wherein all the smart lights in your house will turn off when you say, “Hey Google! Good Night!”. Users can also set routines based on the time of the day. For instance, you can set a routine wherein all the lights in your garden area automatically turn on at 7 pm in the evening.
Device Triggers for Google Assistant routines
These voice-based and time-based triggers have already been available in the Google Home app for some time now. There is a third type where you can include a certain action on any smart device to trigger a command. For example, you can set a routine wherein the light outside your main door automatically turns on and the Nest cam starts sending live video to your phone when someone presses your Nest doorbell. This way, you’ll know who is at the door before you reach to open it.
This functionality will be a part of Google Home app redesign and is expected to be available for Public Preview soon. However, it seems some users are already seeing the same functionality in the old app. A person tested this functionality and posted a short clip on Twitter. It is not clear exactly how widely this feature is available for users.
