Google layoffs in California include 27 massage therapists – Times of India

Last week, Google announced that it is cutting almost 12,000 jobs globally. It has been reported — and Google has confirmed — that the layoffs have taken place across various teams. A report by CNBC now reveals that in the California region, there have been more than 1800 jobs that have been cut. This accounts for close to 15% of the total layoffs at Google.

27 in-house massage therapists laid off

The report also reveals that 24 in-house massage therapists in Mountain View region have lost their jobs. Three other therapists were also laid in Los Angeles and Irvine. Google — pre-pandemic and layoffs — was known to be a company that offered some of the best perks to its employees. In fact, it was also reported in 2022 that Google was offering some perks to employees to get them back in office. It’s not clear whether the layoffs would also lead to the elimination of some of the perks that were offered by Google to its employees.
Google is a California-based company and a lot of jobs in the region have been cut. According to the CNBC report, 1,436 jobs have been cut in Mountain View — where Google is headquartered. About 119 jobs have been cut in San Bruno (the base of YouTube) whereas Palo Alto — hub of Silicon Valley — saw around 53 job cuts.
In an email sent to all Google employees, CEO Sundar Pichai said that the company had reviewed all the divisions and teams and then decided to take a cut. “We’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company. The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions,” he said.
