Google has announced that it will now offer 1080p video calls on Google Meet, but this will not be available to all users. The feature will be available only to users subscribed to Google One Premium and eligible Workspace users.
You can only use 1080P video calls on Google Meet through the web browser, and your computer’s webcam must support the resolution. Google has mentioned that higher bandwidth will be required to send 1080p video, and the resolution will be automatically adjusted in case of limited bandwidth.
The 1080p video call is not activated by default on Google Meet, and you need to turn it on manually. You can turn on the 1080P video calling feature by clicking the three dots at the top right corner of your video feed and selecting the option to Turn on HD video.
The 1080P will be available to Google One subscribers with plans offering 2TB or more storage, which starts at Rs 650 per month in India.
Meanwhile, these Workspace accounts will also be eligible for 1080P video calls on Google Meet: Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus, Enterprise Essentials, and Frontline customers.
Google has also listed accounts that are not eligible to access the 1080p video call feature, which includes Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Education Fundamentals, Frontline, Nonprofits, G Suite Basic, and Business customers. Furthermore, the feature is not available for individuals using personal Google Accounts.
The new 1080p video call feature is being gradually released, starting with Rapid Release domains, and Scheduled Release domains are expected to receive the update from May 4 onwards. Although, it could take up to 15 days for the feature to be available to all users.
In addition to 1080P video calling, Google One also offers other benefits for Google Meet users, including up to 24-hour calls, live streaming on YouTube, noise cancellation, and the ability to record video calls.
