Google once again reminds Apple of ‘messaging trouble’ – Times of India

Amidst all the AI talk, Google snuck in a subtle jibe at Apple during the I/O keynote, sparking the ‘blue bubble, green bubble’ debate once again.
“When you’re texting in a group chat, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether everyone is using the same type of phone,” said Sameer Samat, VP of Product. “Sending high-quality images and video, getting typing notifications, and end-to-end encryption should all just work.”
Samat went on to add, “We hope every mobile operating system gets the message and adopts RCS, so we can all hang out in the group chat together no matter what device we’re using,” which was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Samat was referring to how Apple has still been adamant about not adopting RCS, the messaging protocol that Google has developed.
It is not like you can’t message between an Android and iPhone, but Apple uses iMessage, which puts a divide between the two. So, on an iPhone, the text to and from an Android is shown in green bubbles, while the text between iPhones is in blue, which puts the people using Android aside.
Not just the bubbles, but texting to an Android from an iPhone means no read receipts or typing indicators, and one can’t even send high-quality images or videos, let alone all the other features that Apple has built-in for the iMessage. Same happens when an Android user texts to an iPhone.
Google has been long poking, going all in hiring Drake for musical explainer, “Texts Go Green,” then it even started a campaign “Get the Message.”But Apple being Apple, it has been leaving those messages unread.
Tim Cook, Apple CEO, was once asked about using the RCS standard in iMessage and how Steve Jobs would feel about it. Cook said he hadn’t heard much demand for it from users at this point. He went on to add that he “would love to convert you to an iPhone.”
“The #1 most difficult [reason] to leave the Apple universe app is iMessage … iMessage amounts to serious lock-in,” wrote a former Apple employee in an email sent in 2016, to which Schiller responded that “moving iMessage to Android will hurt us more than help us, this email illustrates why.”
In a court filing, Epic said that Apple made the decision not to create an Android version of iMessage in 2013, despite Eddy Cue admitting that it was possible to make a version that would work with iOS, so the users of both platforms would have been able to communicate seamlessly, but it was never developed.
In the past, Google has expressed disappointment with Apple for not adopting the RCS-enabled protocol. Specifically, Google’s vice president, Hiroshi Lockheimer, voiced sympathy for iPhone users who cannot use RCS. Google even criticised Apple’s texting technology, saying it is “stuck in the 1990s.”
Well, if not any iPhone users, at least more and more people are switching to RCS, around 800 million of which should reach a billion mark by next year. Though, we do not know if that will include any iPhone users or not.
