Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Plus: How the three newly-launched phones fare on repairability scale – Times of India
Just days after the announcement and launch, disassembly teardown videos are out for these phones.
Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro repairability score
As per a disassembly teardown video by PBKreviews, Google Pixel 7 has scored 6 out 10 on the repairability scale. The Pro version scores marginally lower than the regular model and gets only 5.5 out 10. The video suggests that it takes a lot of effort in removing layers to pull the battery out of the shell. Moreover, the adhesive used is so strong that it takes isopropyl alcohol to loosen the joints to remove the battery.
Furthermore, it is impossible to remove Pixel 7 Pro’s back glass from the chassis as it is glued to the frame. Essentially, this means that it will not be easy to replace some parts on the newly-launched Pixel handsets. Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
iPhone 14 Plus repairability score
Apple iPhone 14 gets slightly better scores on the repairability scale. The smartphone’s display and back can be easily removed. However, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol was used to remove the battery but it is not as difficult to remove as it is in the Pixel 7 smartphones. A repairability score of 7 for the Apple iPhone 14 Plus means that it can be easily fixed.
Self-repair kits
Apple and Samsung have been providing self-repair kits in the US for some time now. These kits allow users to easily repair their phones at their homes. Phones with more repairability scores have an edge when it comes to fixing them on their own. Google also partnered with iFixit for self-repair kits earlier this year.
