Google Pixel Fold Undergoes ‘Ultimate Bend Test’ and Failed

Google launched its much-awaited and first-ever foldable phone during the I/O event in May this year. Dubbed Google Pixel Fold, YouTuber JerryRigEverything took the foldable phone for a spin testing out its durability. Turns out the supposed ‘most durable hinge’ phone isn’t that durable after all. Let’s check out more details about it.

Google Pixel Fold Scratch Test

As a general format, Zack from JerryRigEverything took Google Pixel Fold to find the durability of the displays. The outer or cover display started showing scratches when pierced with a level 6 probe while deeper grooves were reported at level 7. For the unversed, it is good since the cover display uses Gorilla Glass Victus on top.

However, the primary foldable display failed to impress as scratches were visible at level 2 itself. It means Pixel Fold is using a display made up of plastic and not UTG making it susceptible to scratches and deeper groves even if your keys rub against it.

Moving on, we have an aluminum frame onboard which looks legit. The fingerprint scanner on top of the power button did scratch but surprisingly, it performed well even after Zack scratched it immensely.

Google Pixel Fold Burn Test

Next comes the infamous burn test. Zack took a lighter to see how the displays react to flames. Turns out the cover panel outperformed expectations withstanding for 16 seconds before turning while and didn’t recover.

However, just as in the case of the scratch test, the inner primary display tends to lay low during the burn test as well. The display was lit against flame for 8 seconds before the phone turned off. It did turn on warning that the phone turned off due to overheating.

Google Pixel Fold Bend Test

The ultimate of the ultimate test, Zack subjected the Pixel Fold to his famous bend test. Turns out the phone isn’t that durable after all. When subjected to fold outwards i.e. forcing the phone to fold against the designed fold inwards, the right half of the screen died. Turns out the hinge is durable enough to withstand excruciating force, however, everything else simply came apart after the YouTuber exerted more pressure.
