According to The New York Times, the success of OpenAI’s chatbot has caused Google to issue a “Code Red.” In an attempt to secure the tech giant’s position, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has asked two of the company’s founders to return and give their take on Google’s AI strategies.
In December, Larry Page and Sergey Brin — who left their full time roles at the company in 2019 — held several meetings with high-ranking staff at Google. Page and Brin had limited their involvement in the company to discussions on “moonshot projects,” which are a series of projects pitched by a diverse range of inventors which could pay off big time if they somehow work out.
Their recent involvement was a lot more serious. The two former executives reviewed the company’s artificial intelligence strategy and, if the sources are correct, outlined plans to implement more AI features into Google’s search functions.
Google’s future use of AI may not be limited to expanding its search functions. Advanced artificial intelligence could also theoretically help fill the gap left by the company’s recent layoffs. On January 20, it was announced that Alphabet — Google’s parent company — had made some wide scale layoffs. Around 6% of the company’s staff, or 12,000 people, were shown the door as part of wider restructuring plans.
It is unknown how big a role AI will play in the company’s future, but Alphabet isn’t starting from scratch. It’s already had a bot that made the news last year because it was a little too convincing.
