Google Messages app is reportedly heating up the smartphones and draining the battery as it leaves the camera on in the background. As per a report by 9to5Google, several Google Messages users have complained about this new bug on Reddit. As per the reports, the app leaves the camera on when a user tries to quickly click a picture within the app to share with other users.
For those who are unaware, Google Messages allow users to share an image from the gallery or use the live feed from the smartphone’s camera to share a quick snapshot. Users can use the thumbnail view for the camera or they can expand it for a clearer view.
According to the report, the new bug occasionally leaves the camera feed running even when it is not being displayed on the screen. The report further suggests that the camera even stays on when the Google Messages app is in the background, resulting in overheating and significant battery drain.
Users were able to spot this new bug through the privacy indicators in Android 12. Privacy indicators let you know when any app is using or used certain sensors on your smartphone. The feature shows a pop-up at the top of the screen whenever any application is using the camera or microphone. It is worth noting that the Android 12 only shows you the alert when the app is accessing the camera or microphone in the background.
The report suggests that you can stop Google Messages from accessing your camera in the background by closing the app from Recents view. If that does not work, the report suggests that you should turn off the camera permission for the app until Google rolls out a fix for the bug. To change app permissions of certain apps, you can go to Settings > Apps & notifications > tap on the app to see and change permissions you have granted.
