Google to start showing Twitter-like blue ticks in Gmail: here’s what they mean

The feature isn’t available for everyone though as it will be available only to those who have Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI). BIMI is a feature Google introduced back in 2021 for brands to use strong authentication and also verify their brand logo that can be displayed as an avatar in emails. Now, brands who use BIMI will get a blue checkmark icon next their name which further proves their authenticity.

BIMI already verifies authenticates and verifies brands indicating that it is legitimate but with the blue checkmark it will make a sort of visual proof that something like this exists. This will also help users understand that emails are coming from verified brands and not some spam account, thereby helping reduce phishing attempts. Google is also adding a small pop-up message saying that the sender of the email is verified, and that they own the domain along with the logo. It will appear when you hover around the blue checkmark.

Google has started rolling out this feature, and it should start showing up in the next three days. As far as availability is concerned, it will be available to all Google Workspace customers, legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers. Even users with personal Google accounts can apply for the blue checkmark. Those interested in setting up BIMI for their Google accounts can head to this link to get started and see what the feature is all about.
