Google: Why Samsung may be behind Google reportedly hitting the ‘panic button’ – Times of India
Citing internal messages, The New York Times reported that Google’s reaction to the Samsung threat was “panic” as an estimated $3 billion in annual revenue was at stake with the Samsung contract. Google reportedly also has a $20 billion contract with Apple that will be up for renewal this year.
Samsung could stick with Google
The report, however, mentioned that it was not clear whether Microsoft’s work with AI was the main reason why Samsung was considering a change. It also highlighted that Google assumed that Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing was the reason for the switch.
“The contract is under negotiation, and Samsung could stick with Google,” the report said. Furthermore, some workers were reportedly told that Google was looking for volunteers this month to help put together material for a pitch to Samsung.
Samsung smartphones run on Google’s Android software and a consideration of switching search engines shocked the company, the report said. Google’s search business was worth $162 billion last year.
Google improving products with AI
Citing a Google spokesperson, the report noted that the company was “continuously improving its search engine to give users and partners more reason to choose Google.”
The company is said to be working on a new search engine with AI and it may announce some new features for the current one next month. Google is holding Google I/O annual developers conference from May 10.
