Google working on a new interface for Meet to make things safer for users: What is it and how it is different from regular interface – Times of India

There are times when you simply want to turn off your camera and microphone during an ongoing Meet call and keep doing whatever you were doing. To facilitate that, Google is reportedly planning to add a new interface to Meet on Android.
9to5Google has reported that Google is preparing a new distraction-free interface for Meet that will automatically turn on when it detects you are on the go. As expected, the new interface will be called On-the-Go and it will be available on Meet’s Android app.
Google hasn’t officially rolled out the feature, but 9to5Google has somehow managed to enable the feature within the app.
Google Meet On-the-Go: What is this feature
According to the report, the On-the-Go feature will change the interface of the Meet app when it will detect that you are moving around during an ongoing call. Once it detects that the person is on the move, it will suggest users turn on the new On-the-Go mode. The report also mentions that the app will also offer users the option to enable the feature manually, even when they are not on the move from the call’s overflow menu.
Meet normal mode vs On-the-Go mode: What’s the difference
Normal Meet mode is the regular mode with all the features enabled including video, audio, mic access and all the other features. With On-the-Go mode, Meet transforms the interface into a somewhat ‘power-saving’ mode for smartphones. It disables the camera and video to help users focus on the surroundings. This also turns off the incoming videos from other participants.
With On-the-Go mode turned on, the app only shows four things – a massive unmute button, raise the hand, audio output switcher and small end call button at the bottom. Then there’s an ‘x’ button to turn off the On-the-Go mode.
