Gran Turismo Reaches 90 Million Sales As Polyphony Digital Celebrates 25th Year Anniversary of the Series
Gran Turismo is one of the biggest series of racing games. The first Gran Turismo game came out for the PlayStation One on December 23, 1997, and has sold over 90 million copies since then.
To celebrate this, PlayStation released a blog post written by Kazunori Yamauchi, who is the creator and producer of Gran Turismo as well as the CEO of Polyphony Digital.
“I was fascinated by real time 3D graphics that many had been waiting for, and created and presented plans for all kinds of video games, not just limited to race games but RPGs, adventure games, action games, puzzle games, and more,” Yamauchi wrote in the blog post.
Yamauchi also talked about Motor Toon Grand Prix and its sequel, which are the precursors to the Gran Turismo series. He also added that if a plan for something other than a racing game had been assigned to him while working at Sony, there’s a big chance he might have been making something else than Gran Turismo.
PlayStation and Polyphony Digital also released a trailer celebrating 25 years of Gran Turismo. You can check out the video below:
Gran Turismo 7 is the latest addition to the racing game series. It came out on the PlayStation 4 and 5 in March 2022. In our review for the title, we praised Polyphony Digital’s decision to take the series back to its roots and bringing back the joy of playing a GT game. However, we also criticised the way the economy works, its microstransactions, in the game as well as the game’s soundtrack.
