Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Official Trailer is Here, Finally Uses Aqua’s Barbie Girl Song

A brand new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film just dropped, and it’s almost three minutes of pure, pink joy as Margot Robbie’s Barbie finds herself not in a Barbie World, but the real world. And yes, they do finally play that song.

With this new trailer, we finally have a better understanding of the story here: Barbie is happy and thriving in her perfectly pink world with Ken and all the other Barbies, until strange things start happening. She’s falling off her house instead of gently floating. She’s thinking about death for the first time. And, worst of all, she has flat feet.

All of this sends Barbie and Ken on a quest into the real world, where she’s a toy, not a person, and has to confront the things that make her very different from actual humans. We seen her sexually harassed, thrown in jail, made fun of by school children, and chased by an evil corporate Will Ferrell. It’s a hard life out there!

Among the highlights of this very joyful trailer are that we finally learned what Barbie was singing in the car in the previous trailer (Closer to Fine by Indigo Girls, excellent choice), and they actually use a cover of Aqua’s Barbie Girl as the trailer’s stinger. While Barbie Girl might sound like a logical fit for a film like this, last year the manager of Aqua’s lead singer said that the song would not be used in the film, most likely due to some long-standing legal drama between record label MCA Records and Mattel. This isn’t Aqua’s version of the song, but rather seems to be a previously-teased cover by Charli XCX.

Barbie is headed to theatres July 21, 2023, starring (alongside Robbie and Ferrell) Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Helen Mirren, John Cena, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandria Shipp, Emma Mackey, America Ferrera, Ritu Arya, Michael Cera, and many others.

We’ve gotten a look at all of the Barbies, Kens, humans, and others already in a series of darling character posters, and we also have heard from Ryan Gosling how he had to bleach his hair and shave his legs to fully understand Ken.
