Gurugram techie loses almost Rs 43 lakh in ‘like YouTube videos’ WhatsApp scam
The software engineer was approached with a very common tactic that’s used in these ongoing scams. It started on March 24 when he received a message saying that he can earn additional money by doing this simple task of liking YouTube videos, according to a report by Times of India. The techie was then asked to join a Telegram group and invest money for assured returns. In what seems like a very surprising act, the techie decided to invest a total amount of Rs 42,31,600 from his and his wife’s account.
The scammers responded saying that his investment has earned him Rs 69 lakh along with profits. But he wasn’t allowed to withdraw money and instead asked to invest Rs 11,000 more. This is when he though that there was something “fishy” going on, and decided to complain to the police about the incident. He tried withdrawing the money but he was denied access to it. An FIR has been registered against the scammers but there’s no information on them yet.
WhatsApp scams
In this particular incident, the scammers introduced themselves as Divya, Kamal, Ankit, Bhoomi, and Harsh. This is different from what has been doing the rounds with people receiving calls and messages from international numbers, but the nature of the scam is exactly the same.
We had reported earlier about this WhatsApp user who decided to find out what this scam is all about. He was also asked to like YouTube videos and earn money, and which he did. The next process was to join a Telegram group and invest money for assured returns and profit, much like this incident. These scammers try to lure people by introducing themselves as HRs and offering easy work-from-home jobs.
WhatsApp has already advised people to block and report such users on the app. There’s also a grievance officer based in India that users can reach out to for more help. WhatsApp is also enabling Truecaller integration on the app to identify potential spam numbers.
