Gymnastics appoint steering committee to rid sport of abuse

A nine strong steering committee has been established by Gymnastics New Zealand, to implement recommendations from the independent review of the sport.

The review released earlier this year confirmed a culture of abuse in the sport.

The committee which has representatives from both inside and outside of gymnastics, will meet for the first time in the New Year.

Over the next 15 months it will make proposals to the Gymnastics New Zealand board on changes in areas across the sport, including leadership and culture.

Gymnastics New Zealand said in a statement the steering committee reflects the diverse gymnastics community, from high performance athletes to club level across a range of roles and clubs, demographics, genders, and geographies.

There are also child and youth and human rights specialist on the panel.

“This is a positive opportunity for change so we encourage the gymnastics community to please come with us in the waka – your insights and perspectives will help make the change practical,” said Sally McKechnie, chair of the steering committee.

“There will be plenty of opportunities for the community to get involved in working groups and workstreams the committee identifies, and we encourage you to be active in shaping the culture and future of gymnastics,” she said.
