Hamilton and F1 colleagues plan tribute to Queen at Italian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton and the rest of the F1 paddock will pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II by holding a minute’s silence ahead of first practice at the Italian Grand Prix on Friday. Respects will be paid to Her Majesty in the pit lane at Monza at 1.50pm local time, 10 minutes prior to the start of the session.

The world’s longest-reigning monarch passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday afternoon, hours after it was confirmed she had been placed under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Tributes from across the sporting world have since flooded in for the Queen and respects have been held at various sporting events which have taken place in the hours since, with the Europa League, US Open and NFL all holding a minute’s silence.

F1 will now come together to pay tribute to the Queen over the coming race weekend in Monza. All teams will gather in the pit lane for a minute’s silence in memory of the Queen shortly before first practice for the Italian Grand Prix on Friday. Another minute’s silence will likely be held on the grid ahead of Sunday’s race.

Following the Queen’s passing, various personnel from across the F1 world have paid their own personal tributes to the monarch who has reigned for the past 70 years. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said: “Formula 1 mourns the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“For more than seven decades she dedicated her life to public service with dignity and devotion and inspired so many around the world. Formula 1 sends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.”

Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours back in 2013, wrote: “Very saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her remarkable reign touched and moved so many; remaining steadfast in her duties as a mother and our monarch to the end.

“I had the honour of meeting Her Majesty a couple of times and she will be remembered by a country and commonwealth whom she served for more than 70 years, devoting herself with unreserved dignity and dedication. I would like to take the opportunity to send my deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this time.”
