Lewis Hamilton has admitted he would “love to try” racing an IndyCar one day as he opened up on his plans after retirement from F1, with contract negotiations with Mercedes still ongoing. The seven-time world champion’s current deal with the Silver Arrows expires at the end of the season and there have been rumours of him moving elsewhere or even quitting the sport.
Team principal Toto Wolff insisted that Hamilton putting pen to paper on a new contract was just a matter of time at the Miami Grand Prix, quelling rumours of a potential move to Ferrari or quitting F1 altogether as he still has ambitions of moving past Michael Schumacher on the all-time list of championships.
Staying in F1 has not stopped Hamilton from pursuing other racing events, as he explained how he would like to try out different cars even though he is reluctant to compete elsewhere.
Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen moved to NASCAR after their F1 careers and when Hamilton was asked about following in their footsteps, he replied to Autosport: “I did a car swap with Tony Stewart years ago, which was fun. I’d love to try it at some stage.
“It’s not a dream for me to go and race in another series, but I am an admirer and a fan of racing and other sports, so I always like to try. It’s an amazing opportunity and I got to swap with Valentino Rossi and try a MotoGP bike. I sometimes watch IndyCar. I’d love to try one of those cars at some stage.”
Despite expressing an interest in IndyCar, Hamilton does have clear demand that it would have to be an older generation car for him to get behind the steering wheel. “I’m not big fan of the big screen that they have,” he said. “But like the old-school cars they have, the cars sound and look good,” he said. “But right now, my focus is solely on Formula 1. So, I don’t plan on leaving here anytime soon.”
When those days will come remains to be seen as Hamilton is expected to extend his time in F1, though has admitted to considering quitting the sport altogether previously. In March he posted on Instagram: “Some days I feel like stopping. When I start to feel this way I dig deep and remember I’m on a mission. Whether you realise it or not, you’re on a mission too. We’re all chasing something.
“Some dream or goal that will make us better people, make our lives more fulfilling, and make us proud of ourselves. Some days it’ll feel impossible to get there, but it’s not. We can get it. We will get it.
“I know you’re with me, I feel the love and support and just know I’m sending it back to you tenfold. We got this.”
