Hamilton told he’s better than Schumacher with ‘softer’ verdict
F1 pundit Peter Windsor has hailed Lewis Hamilton as a better driver than Michael Schumacher. The pair are tied for the most Formula 1 wins of all time at seven, but Windsor has highlighted why exactly Hamilton is better than Schumacher as the debate rumbles on.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Windsor compared the two F1 legends and gave his verdict on who he thought was better.
“I think he [Lewis Hamilton] probably is [better than Michael Schumacher],” he said. “I don’t want my opinion of Michael to be colored too much by the Mercedes years, and I like to think of Michael as he was at Benetton and Ferrari.”
“I think Lewis is slightly softer on inputs everywhere, I think he’s just got this very soft touch. I think Michael was slightly rougher, slightly but not much. I think Lewis is slightly softer than Michael.”
“Both [have] incredible feel for the car; both of them have this hugely wide palette on which they can paint the picture they need for the car. And neither of them was trapped into thinking that braking late or a high minimum speed was an absolute given; very similar in that respect. I just think Lewis [has a] slightly softer touch, slightly.”
He added: “It’s just almost gut feeling but it’s also watching them at corners like copse or down the hill that left-hander in Nurburgring, esses at Suzuka, that feel you can get through there. So yeah I’d give it to Lewis actually.”
Hamilton hasn’t won a Formula 1 title since 2020, an utterly dominant campaign that saw him win 11 out of 17 races. In 2021, he was pipped to the title by Max Verstappen after a controversial conclusion to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix while 2022 saw him finish sixth with zero wins.
This season Hamilton is in fourth place at the time of writing with one podium finish and no wins. Verstappen is already beginning to build up a healthy lead on his rivals at the top of the table and established his position as World No1 with a sensational come-from-behind win in Miami.
It looks as though Hamilton may struggle to topple the Dutchman and claim a record-breaking eighth world title this year and at 38 years old time is running out for him to go one step further than Schumacher.
