Hayao Miyazaki’s Next Film, How Do You Live, Is Coming in 2023

Hayao Miyazaki’s next Studio Ghibli film now has a Japanese release date.

Revealed on Twitter, Studio Ghibli said the upcoming How Do You Live is set to hit theaters in Japan on July 14, 2023. The studio also shared a new poster for the movie, which depicts a sketch of what appears to be a bird-like creature.

How Do You Live is a big moment for Miyazaki and Ghibli fans, as it marks the legendary filmmaker’s first full feature film since coming out of retirement. The director known for works like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and more originally retired in 2013 after directing The Wind Rises. Miyazaki revealed he was coming back for one more movie simply, “Because I wanted to.”

The new movie is based on a 1937 novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino. The story of How Do You Live follows 15-year-old Junichi Honda after the death of his father. He heads to live with his uncle, who lives by a very different lifestyle. The themes of the original story deal with perspective, the structure of society, and how we fit in.
