Hayes nets a double as Purton rides his 1,400th winner in Hong Kong

Lucky With You sizzled on the Champions Day undercard at Sha Tin on Sunday, highlighting a David Hayes double that saw the Australian trainer move to 33 winners for the season and sail past last campaign’s win tally.

Following the main attraction of the three Group Ones on the card, Lucky With You got the better of the well-touted Cordyceps Six to win the Class Two Silent Witness Handicap (1,200m) to round out the programme.

“I know that Richard Gibson and Blake Shinn have a huge opinion of the second horse and he did quicken like a good horse but mine was able to hold him out,” Hayes said.

“He ran a very fast time and you can forget his last two runs because everything went wrong.

“I think he’ll be a Class One horse next season. I think he’ll run a mile if he’s ridden correctly next season, but in the short-term we’ll stick to 1,200-1,400m.”

Hayes had earlier been successful when Kai Xin Dragon made all the running to land the Class Four Sacred Kingdom Handicap (1,200m) under Shinn.

Elsewhere on the card, Zac Purton ticked off another milestone when riding his 1,400th Hong Kong winner aboard Beauty Joy in the Class Two Bullish Luck Handicap (1,600m).

A well-backed $2.4 favourite, the Tony Cruz-trained runner came from midfield to easily beat Savaquin and Classic Cup runner-up Turin Redsun, who was making his first start since competing in the four-year-old series.

While Purton continues to hit new peaks in the city, Lyle Hewitson is just starting out at the bottom of the mountain and he had his best day in the saddle in Hong Kong with his first double.

First successful aboard the David Hall-trained Kung Fu Tea in the Class Four Able One Handicap (1,400m), Hewitson was forced to wait out a protest by runner-up Maldives’ jockey Shinn before he could claim his second win on the day aboard Super Ten in the Class Three Vengeance Of Rain Handicap (1,400m).
