Here’ what Google CEO Sundar Pichai said about Apple Vision Pro

With the launch of Vision Pro augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) headset at its developer conference, Apple has officially kicked off the era of spatial computing. The device can be controlled with voice, eyes and hands gestures. It is priced at $3,499 and will start shipping early next year starting with the US market.

Apple Vision Pro seems to challenge rivals like Meta and Google in the mixed reality headset category. While Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg did not seem to be impressed with the new Apple device, Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently said that he is ‘excited’ about the technology.

In a Q&A session with Bloomberg, Pichai said that although he hasn’t tried the $3,499 Apple Vision Pro headset yet, but Google has ‘always felt computing will evolve beyond the black rectangles.’ By black rectangles, he probably meant today’s smartphones.

‘We will have more immersive experiences. I’m excited about the potential for the technology,’ he further added.

When asked about how many of Google’s new AI products have been presented as experiments and how much potential he sees for them to be a permanent part of Google search, Pichai said that ‘these are going to be part of the mainstream search experience. There are a few things we want to make sure we get right…There’s no room to get that wrong.”

Answering questions about Bard and generative AI, he said “There are areas where we do better. There are areas where we are behind. I view this as a very, very early time.”

“It’s a competitive moment, but I’ve built the company to be AI native for a long time. I feel better positioned for this than we were for the shift to mobile,” he added.

In another news, Apple is reportedly working on a cheaper version of Vision Pro. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device could be unveiled by the end of 2025. He said that Apple will probably use lower quality screens, either an iPhone-grade chip or an older Mac chip and fewer cameras for lesser performance to bring down the price.
