Here’s how Sony wants to make your Android TV safe – Times of India

Google is currently fighting an Android ecosystem-related legal battle in India. It says that its operating system provides both security and privacy that others may not. Now Sony, which uses Android TV in its televisions, is working to make them safe.
As per a report by Android Authority, Sony is planning to release a monitoring application on smart TVs and streaming devices that will block sideloaded piracy applications. The Japanese company has filed a new patent application to block piracy apps on its smart TVs and streaming devices. The patent filed is likely to be for Android TV.

Here’s how the patent app will keep users safe
The system-level “monitor” application contains a block list of known pirated network resources, such as URLs and IP addresses, as a result, it will identify third-party applications, the company was cited as saying.
The third-party applications will be blocked from running after they have been identified by the monitor application. It will also throttle the pirated app to provide a degraded experience or pause the content at irregular intervals.
It is to be noted that since this is just a patent application, it is not necessary that it will see the light of the day and roll out on commercial Sony devices.

Google’s Android ecosystem
Recently, Google listed in a blog post a number of positive points of the Android ecosystem. This was in response to an order by the Indian antitrust regulator asking the company to pay a fine of Rs 1,337 crore for misusing its dominant position in the Android ecosystem.
While the fine is mostly related to the company’s dominance in the smartphone space, Google also offers Android TV operating system for televisions. The company said that Android leaves OEMs free to pre-install any other app and app stores and they all already do.
