Here’s what Google has to say on the Supreme Court ruling in Android case – Times of India
“We remain committed to our users and partners and will cooperate with the CCI on the way forward. We are reviewing the details of yesterday’s decision which is limited to interim relief and did not decide the merits of our appeal,” news agency Reuters quoted a Google spokesperson as saying.
What is the Google-CCI case?
Last year, CCI imposed a fine totalling Rs 2,273 crore on Google in two different orders. The first fine was Rs 1,337 crore for abusing its dominant position in the Android mobile device ecosystem and the second one was Rs 936 crore for abusing its monopoly through Play Store.
Google moved the NCLAT seeking a stay on the order on the Rs 1,337 crore penalty, however, the tribunal asked Google India to deposit 10% of the fine. Google then moved the Supreme Court, which also refused to stay the fine.
Google even said that the parts of the order against it were copy-pasted from the EU ruling against it.
What SC said on Google-CCI issue?
A bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud along with Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala, said the findings by the CCI cannot be said to be without jurisdiction or with manifest error. The bench also directed the NCLAT to dispose of Google’s appeal by March 31. It also granted Google seven days to deposit 10% of the penalty.
Consumers at risk: Google
Google previously argued that the CCI recommendations on Android will strike blows to areas such as “online safety, affordability and expanded use cases for the next wave of users.” India has 700 million Android users. It says that Google won;t be able to provide the same level of security and privacy to Android “forks” that it provides with its own ecosystem. He also argued that the recommendations will also make Android smartphones expensive in India.
