Here’s what Meta has to say about WhatsApp Communities’ impact in India – Times of India
The executive participated in a discussion with leaders from WhatsApp’s Community Builders Program in India. It revolved around how the recently-launched feature ’ is helping organisations achieve their common goal of driving social impact at scale in the country.
“Our aim with WhatsApp Communities is to make conversations [on WhatsApp Groups] easier, more efficient and more impactful, empowering people and helping them organise and stay connected. With WhatsApp’s simple, reliable and safe platform, communities can organise their group conversations under one umbrella, which will make it easier for them to get things done while working towards a common cause, without compromising on privacy and security – making it a powerful tool to drive social impact at scale,” Clegg said in a statement.
The roundtable discussion included participants from five Indian communities: healthcare, mental health, digital literacy, education and women empowerment. WhatsApp says that these participants highlighted how Communities feature is facilitating efficient and more impactful conversations.
The Meta-owned instant messaging platform says that it has been working with 10 organisations as part of WhatsApp’s Community Builders Program, which is offered to only 50 communities globally. These organisations are helping WhatsApp in making Communities better by providing real-time feedback. WhatsApp also says that it will continue to add features “over the coming months.”
‘India’s becoming true digital superpower’
The development comes a day after Clegg, who started his trip to India this week, said that India is becoming a true digital superpower which is a good thing for the world.
“India now ranks very close to the top of the table of most significant digital economies. What I sense from some of my recent discussions, and this is perhaps especially relevant as India is assuming the chairmanship of G20, is that India believes in the foundational principles of an open internet where data can flow openly around the world, but also where people’s privacy and safety are properly secured and where innovation is encouraged and fostered,” he said in an interview with Times of India.
WhatsApp Communities can be accessed at the top of the chats on Android and at the bottom on iOS. By tapping on “New Communities”, users will be able to start a new community and can add up to 50 groups.
