Here’s why Microsoft is threatening to cut off competitors’ access to Bing data – Times of India
Microsoft plans to prevent its competitors from using Bing’s search index to fuel their AI chatbots. As per a report by Bloomberg, Microsoft informed two unnamed search engines powered by Bing that if they continue using Microsoft’s search data with their AI tools, the company will limit their access to it completely.
According to the report, Microsoft has licensed Bing’s search data to numerous search engines, such as DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and the AI search engine You.com. Although DuckDuckGo uses a blend of its own web crawler and Bing to produce search results, You.com and Neeva also incorporate some of their outcomes from Bing, resulting in significant time and resource savings that would otherwise have been required to crawl the whole internet.
As per sources familiar with the matter, the report said that Microsoft had set a boundary when it comes to using Bing’s search index as input for AI chatbots. Microsoft allegedly views this use of Bing’s data as a violation of the contract and may opt to terminate its contracts with the search engines accused of such misuse.
While Bloomberg’s report doesn’t specify which search engines it’s referring to, DuckDuckGo, You.com, and Neeva have all recently incorporated AI tools.
DuckDuckGo, You.com both have AI products
DuckDuckGo introduced DuckAssist, which generates AI-generated summaries from various sources, including Wikipedia, for specific searches. Similarly, You.com offers an AI chat feature that responds to user queries, and Neeva has launched an AI-powered tool that produces annotated summaries.
Microsoft told Bloomberg that they have reached out to non-compliant partners and are working directly with them to ensure they adhere to the terms of their agreement. Microsoft added that they are providing any necessary information to help the partners find a way forward.
