Here’s why users of ‘old’ iPhones need to update their devices urgently – Times of India
Apple has released a rare but important update for older iPhones and iPads. The iOS 12.5.6 update has been released for some of the old iPhone and iPad models, which have not received any update in a long time.
The update comes for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus; a few selected iPads, including the original iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3, in addition to the 6th gen iPod touch. The last update, iOS 12.5.5, for these models was released in 2021, addressing some security concerns, similar to the latest update. So, do not expect new features while installing the iOS 12.5.6 update.
The build number for the latest iOS 12.5.6 update is 16H71, addresses a major security vulnerability related to WebKit, which led to arbitrary code execution. Apple says it’s “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited”.
It is highly advised to update your iPhones and iPads to iOS 12.5.6 if you still have not. The update weighs 275MB and if you have not received a notification to update, head over to Settings > General > Software Update and update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch as soon as possible.
The zero-day bug which has been fixed in the latest update has been listed as CVE-2022-32893, a kernel-level exploit and one of the two bugs already patched on the newer iPhones and iPads earlier in August. The new iOS 12.5.6 update ensures the operating system’s safety, but individual apps on these older models may still be at some risk.
Apple still has not released a patch for WebKit bug CVE-2022-32893, so iPhones and iPads running iOS 12 would still be vulnerable to the said bug, compromising individual apps on these older models.
