Horizon Forbidden West Acknowledges Fear of Deep Water in New Update

Guerrilla Games have really doubled down on the Horizon franchise since its release all the way back in 2017. We received a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn last year with Horizon Forbidden West in 2022. Recently, a VR variant for the franchise with Horizon Call of the Mountain released for the PSVR 2. Now, Guerrilla Games is gearing up to release its first DLC for Forbidden West on April 19, dubbed Burning Shores.

Leading up to the release of the DLC, Guerrilla Games release patch 1.21 to pave the path for Burning Shores. This patch is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 platform and comes with new accessibility features such as, enlarging subtitles, auto-pickup, color blindness settings, auto camera, navigation assist in Focus Mode, Thalassophobia mode, and more.

One addition that grasped the attention of many players is the addition of Thalassophobia mode. Thalassophobia is a fear of deep-water bodies such as lakes, oceans and seas. This is a welcome addition for players, who were having trouble exploring the underwater sections in Horizon Forbidden West.

According to a report by Verge, the developers has stated that the inclusion of this mode is to “ease Thalassophobia symptoms”, which will be done through the enhancement of “underwater ambient visibility” and also providing players the ability to “breathe indefinitely” underwater.
