How upcoming iPhone displays may allow users to type in the rain – Times of India

Most modern smartphones are certified with certain IP ratings that allow them to withstand some moisture. The devices come with the capability to resist light showers, however, that doesn’t make it easier for users to type on a wet display or with wet fingers. According to a report by PhoneArena, Apple has recently got a patent approved that is expected to make it easier for users to operate an iPhone’s display, even in the rain. The new patent named “Modifying functionality of an electronic device during a moisture exposure event” has been awarded to the Cupertino- based tech giant by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the report mentions.
How this new patent will improve iPhone displays
As per the report, Apple is planning to tweak the iPhone display in such a way that it works in “light rain, a steady drenching, or if the handset is being used underwater.” The technology that is explained in the patent states that these updated displays will also detect and eliminate “false taps” on the screen (which are generally caused when the panel gets wet).
Moreover, this technology might also change on-screen controls accordingly and may include larger buttons which are expected to be placed further away from each other to improve “the accuracy of pressing the right button when the screen is wet” the report mentions.
Apart from these, the capacitive iPhone screen will automatically change to a pressure-sensitive display much like the Force Touch and 3D Touch technologies that are no longer used by Apple.
The report also suggests that the company will need to make these “finger-presses” work with more force than “a dynamic threshold that would change depending on the kind of moisture event,” to prevent rain drops or liquid from accidentally turning the touch inputs inactive and making it hard for users to accurately type on the wet screen.
How will this new technology work?
The report mentions that the patent documentation has revealed how the iPhone camera app will offer settings for “dry,” “wet,” and “underwater” modes. Changes will be made to the camera UI depending upon the mode selected by the users. For example, in the wet mode, some features will be removed from the UI whereas, in the underwater mode, some of the controls will be replaced with extra-large buttons. These buttons will help users to activate the camera underwater, however, additional functionalities will be restricted while in the mode.
Meanwhile, the iPhone displays are also expected to show “the current depth of the device” for users to “keep it within the limits of the handset’s water resistance.” To save users from confusion, Apple will also have to be mindful of the “size expansion and the location changes of camera UI buttons,” the report claims.
However, it is important to note that Apple gets several patents approved every year, but not all of them “results in new technology that is implemented right away.” The report also states that there is no clear evidence about Apple being interested in implementing this new technology right away.
