HSBC down – users fume as online banking stops working on busy Black Friday

HSBC is currently down and not working right now with thousands currently unable to access key services such as online banking and the all-important smartphone app. The vital financial platforms hit the buffers at around 8 am this morning with HSBC confirming that it is aware of the glitch and is working on a fix.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), HSBC said that it is having issues this morning and is working to resolve them. “We understand some customers are having trouble accessing banking services as usual right now,” the bank explained. “We’re investigating this as a matter of urgency and will share an update as soon as possible.”

News of these gremlins has been rolling in all morning with outage monitor Down Detector showing some 4,000 reports at its peak. This is slowly falling but at the time of writing there were still over 1,500 alerts being shown on Down Detector’s HSBC graph.

With the Black Friday sales kicking off today and many getting paid around this time, the problems have been a massive frustration for many.

Speaking on X, one angry user called Catherine said: “Of course HSBC decide to do their online banking upgrade right in the middle of Black Friday, so I can’t check whether I have enough money for the offer I want because both mobile and PC banking are down”

And another named Niki added: “@HSBC_UK app is still down on one of the busiest shopping days of the year!”

There’s no word when a full service will be resumed but we’ll update this article when we hear more.
