Huge get for Jockey Club as Bowman joins HK’s riding ranks for next three months

Hugh Bowman, the jockey synonymous with record-breaking horse Winx and the winner of more than 100 Group One races, will join Hong Kong’s riding ranks in time for the November 16 meeting at Happy Valley.

The Jockey Club has granted a licence from November 13 to February 12 inclusive to Bowman, who has ridden winners at the highest level in not only native Australia but also Japan and Hong Kong.

Internationally, four-time New South Wales champion jockey Bowman is best known for his association with Winx, the Chris Waller-trained galloper who won 33 consecutive races, 25 of them in Group One class.

Bowman rode Winx in 31 of her last 33 races – he did not miss any of her 25 Group One victories – with the highlights being the mare’s four consecutive Cox Plate triumphs, the first of which in 2015 came at the expense of David Hayes-trained horse Criterion.

In Hong Kong, 2019 Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductee Bowman is famous for his partnership with Werther, the John Moore-prepared galloper on whom he won three Group One races and another major event.

Bowman and Werther combined to win the 2016 QEII Cup, 2017 Hong Kong Gold Cup and 2017 Champions & Chater Cup, as well as the final act of the 2015-16 season’s Classic Series, the 2016 Hong Kong Derby.

Also, Bowman teamed up with Lucky Bubbles to win the 2017 Chairman’s Sprint Prize at Group One level and he steered Furore to 2019 Hong Kong Derby glory.

Jockey Club executive director of racing Andrew Harding is looking forward to seeing Bowman’s trademark ‘She’s Apples’ sign return to the city.

“Hugh has ridden in Hong Kong with great success over the years. It’s very exciting to have him join the jockeys’ room for part of the 2022-23 season,” Harding said.

“His achievements around the world speak for themselves. I know trainers and owners will love having him available, just as racing fans will be thrilled to see him compete here.”

Bowman, 42, has advised Jockey Club officials that 124 pounds is his minimum riding weight.
