Ian Wright makes ‘unfair’ comment about Mudryk and backs Trossard

Ian Wright has claimed that Mykhaylo Mudryk has been left in an ‘almost unfair’ position at Chelsea due to the events surrounding his transfer. However, the Arsenal legend also stated that his former club failing to sign the Ukrainian winger could end up being ‘the best thing to happen’ with Leandro Trossard excelling since his arrival.

Mudryk had been widely expected to join Arsenal from Shakhtar Donetsk in January following six months of sustained interest from the Emirates. However, the Gunners spent too much time haggling over the final details and Chelsea swooped to bring him to Stamford Bridge instead in an £88million deal.

Arsenal ended up moving for Brighton star Trossard once Mudryk’s move to west London had been confirmed and the two players have had widely contrasting fortunes so far. The Ukrainian is yet to fully impress, contributing just one assist in his first seven games while the Belgian has hit the ground running with a goal and five assists in all competitions.

Now, Wright has offered his opinion on their respective starts as he claimed missing out on Mudryk was the best thing for Arsenal. However, he tempered his criticism for the young winger suggesting he was in an ‘unfair’ position as a result of his initial transfer.

“They (Arsenal) didn’t get Mudryk and that might be the best thing that happened to them,” Wright said on Wrighty’s House Podcast. “I don’t care what anyone says, Mudryk, and we’ve seen up to this point, he wouldn’t have done what Trossard has done what Trossard has been doing up to this point.

“Mudryk, for his own sake, I do feel sorry for him because I don’t know if there’s anyone in the history of football whose had to have a transfer of that amount of money with so much politicalness around him. It’s almost unfair.”

Mudryk did return to the Chelsea lineup against Leicester on Saturday and put in a more positive performance, having an elusive first goal for the club ruled out for offside. He will look to build on his display as he seeks to break into Graham Potter’s first team on a more regular basis.

Meanwhile, Trossard could find his minutes more limited with Gabriel Jesus’ return to full fitness and he will be doing everything he can to show Mikel Arteta that he deserves a place in the lineup.
