Ian Wright responds to viewers after getting Goncalo Ramos’ name wrong

ITV pundit Ian Wright responded to the “trolls” after he was caught getting Portugal’s new star Goncalo Ramos’ name wrong during the game. The Benfica man started over Cristiano Ronaldo in a bold call by boss Fernando Santos, but his decision was vindicated as Ramos claimed a hat-trick and an assist on Portugal’s way to a 6-1 win over Switzerland to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The Arsenal icon was impressed by Ramos, who had been linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, but accidentally called him Goncalo Gomes instead. After viewers noticed the error, Wright was pulled up on it by host Mark Pougatch.

“As the Lusail empties here, Portugal into the quarter-finals they have hammered Switzerland six goals to one here,” Pougatch said before making a jibe at Wright. “And a new hero with the match ball and we get so excited Ian sometimes we can’t remember what his name is.” Wright then responded by hitting out at the viewers who were complaining: “It’s OK, we can give the trolls something to write about. Ramos!”

He is not the only pundit to have made a recent error, as ex-England striker Eni Aluko was criticised for her mistake when discussing Richarlison’s goal record for Brazil. “He’s the top scorer for Brazil over the last two years,” the former Lioness said. “He’s for a great record – 19 goals in 40 games, do the math and it’s a goal-a-game pretty much.”
