NEW DELHI: Neutral umpires will be back in international cricket since the Covid-19 pandemic started in March 2020. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to work on a hybrid model to encourage more local umpires. This could mean that the bilateral Tests may have one neutral umpire and one local umpire.
“The chief executive’s committee (CEC) acknowledged that the performance of home umpires was strong and had not affected games. The use of home umpires had also led to 12 members of the international panel umpires making their Test match debut. CEC agreed that more neutral match officials should be utilised as travel restrictions are lifted while building on the success of the use of home umpires,” an ICC statement read after the board meetings in Dubai on Sunday.
The ICC has decided to promote more umpires and it has devised a format where there will be one on-field neutral umpire, one neutral third umpire and one neutral third umpire in Test matches while rest all formats in bilateral series will be played with home umpires and referees.
A call on the number of the DRS reviews will be taken at the next cricket committee’s meeting. ICC had increased the number of DRS reviews to three from two after the pandemic hit.
MCC law changes may come into effect in October
The recent changes in laws of playing conditions made by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) which has abolished the word ‘Mankading’ and has called running out a non-striker backing up as a run out along with new batter taking strike after caught dismissal will have to go through the ICC cricket committee. And if the changes are adopted in totality then they will be applied from October.
Focus on BCCI as ICC chairman finishes term in Oct
All eyes will be on the Indian cricket board (BCCI) when ICC chairman Greg Barclay completes his term in October. BCCI office-bearers, including president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, will also complete their three-year terms in October this year.
According to sources, BCCI is working towards zeroing in on a candidate to contest the elections in October. Both Ganguly and Shah are considered to be viable candidates for the ICC post if they don’t want to stretch their BCCI term beyond October.
Raja’s 4-nation tournament dismissed
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja’s idea of a four-nation tournament has been rejected unanimously by the International Cricket Committee (ICC) board on Sunday.
TOI understands that there have been lots of good discussions around the idea presented by Raja and there was acknowledgement from a cricketing perspective. But practically it doesn’t work. ICC events schedule is fixed and the world body is going to market with the FTP that is in place. There’s no space. Besides, other non-included members weren’t happy with the concept of compromising ICC events.
Inaugural U-19 women’s WC in SA
South Africa was confirmed as the host of the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, to be staged in January next year as a 16-team and 41-match event. The tournament was initially planned for 2021. Bangladesh was the front-runner to host it.
