It was a historic outing for the Indian senior team at the World Bridge Championships this time in Italy.
The Indian senior team of Subrata Saha, Sukamal Das, Ashok Goel, R.Krishnan, Anil Padhye and Rajesh Dalal bagged the silver medal for the country in the World Bridge Championships which was held from March 28 to April 9 at Salsomaggiore, Italy.
This was the first time the Indian senior team reached the final of the championships and the first time in 45 years of the Championship that India has clinched a silver medal. The seniors team bagged the second place finish in the d’Orsi Trophy. Before this, India had brought home a bronze in 2019 in the Wuhan edition.
The World Bridge Championship is held in four categories: Open team (Bermuda Bowl), Women’s team (Venice Cup), Seniors team (d’Orsi Trophy) and Mixed team (Wuhan cup).
In the finals, the Indian team lost the gold medal to the team from Poland by a margin of 239-194.
“India gained points in the first session of the day only to see Poland sweep them aside in the next one,” said an official statement.
The Indian team defeated the USA by a narrow margin of 3 points and France by a margin of 225-197 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively, to make their way to the finals.
A total of 103 countries participated in the 10 day long World Bridge Championship. Only 24 of these could make it to the final round.
Switzerland won the Bermuda Bowl defeating Netherlands; in the Women’s group, Sweden lifted the Venice Cup and in the Mixed group, France beat USA1 and took home the Wuhan Cup.
On Thursday, the World Bridge Federation announced that the 2022 World Bridge Series will be held at Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, Poland, from August 19 to September 3.
