Pre-Match Analysis:
Two-time runners-up India will start their new WTC cycle with 2 matches Test series against West Indies. Considering the future, BCCI has decided to give more prominence to fresh blood and hence included Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Test squad. Veteran Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara who had an abysmal WTC Final against Australia has been omitted from the squad. Seamer Mukesh Kumar who didn’t get a game after earning an ODI call-up last year against South Africa has been included for the first time in the Indian Test squad. After a dream comeback in the WTC Final against Australia, Ajinkya Rahane has been straight away elevated to the vice-captaincy role. Obviously, it’s a tough call for the management to pick the final eleven with plenty of competition in the squad.
West Indies announced 13 man squad for the opening Test that features uncapped Alick Athanaze and Kirk McKenzie. Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican too return to the Test squad. Experienced batter Kraigg Brathwaite will continue to lead the side in the longest format and Jermaine Blackwood named as his deputy. Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph joined the squad directly after ending ICC World Cup Qualifier in the mid-way when West Indies had no chance of going further. All-rounders Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers are expected to join the squad for the 2nd Test. They are playing their 1st Test at home after 12 months.
