India goes up two ranks in the global ranking of mobile internet speed – Times of India

Indian telecom operators launched 5G services in India in October last year and since then, have been steadily rolling out the next-generation network for customers. The country has seen a continuous rise in global ranking of median mobile speeds in the last five months. As per a latest report, India went up two spots – from 69th in January to 67th in February – in the Speedtest Global Index.
According to Ookla‘s latest update on the Speedtest Global Index for the month of February 2023, Median mobile download speeds in India increased from 29.85Mbps in January to 30.96Mbps in February.
In November, India ranked at 105th position globally in median mobile speeds “making it a commendable performance by India in the past one quarter.” Furthermore, India has climbed 51 places on the Speedtest Global Index since launching 5G – from 118th in September 2022 to 67th in February 2023.

5G speeds and availability on the rise
Last month, a report by Ookla suggested that the median 5G download speeds are 25 times faster than 4G. Kolkata achieved the fastest median 5G download speeds in January 2023 at above 500Mbps.
When it comes to telcos, Jio experienced a top median 5G download speed of 506.25Mbps in Kolkata, while Airtel of 268.89Mbps in Delhi. The 5G availability also increased 55-fold, reaching 8.0% for Airtel and 5.1% for Jio till January 2023. The Ookla report also noted that users are migrating away from Vi due to the operator’s inability to launch 5G.
A report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) last month also suggested decreasing share of Vi in India.

‘Digital India‘ becoming a reality
The previous report, which lists data till January 2023, also claimed that India is ahead of some of the G20 countries, such as Mexico, Russia, and Argentina, and its neighbours: Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.
At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), Fredrik Jejdling, executive vice president and head of business area networks at Ericsson, told Times of India-Gadgets Now that network stability in India is better in many European cities “at this stage”. Ericsson is among telecom players that has been providing the underlying technology and infrastructure for 5G rollout in the country.
Fall in median fixed broadband speed ranking
Ookla also said that India decreased two spots in rank globally for overall median fixed broadband speeds. It was at 81st position in February from 79th in January. However, the country’s performance in fixed median download speeds witnessed a slight increase from 50.02Mbps in January to 50.87Mbps in February.
