HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ajinkya Rahane has just scored one half century since his century against Australia in December 2020
  • Rahane will be leading India in the first Test against New Zealand
  • Gambhir said that India should open with KL Rahul an Mayank Agarwal

Ajinkya Rahane is “quite fortunate” to be part of the Indian Test team considering his form over the past two years but he should now try to cash in on the opportunity he has got to play a match in home conditions in the upcoming series against New Zealand, former batsman Gautam Gambhir has said. Rahane has managed just one half century since scoring a century against Australia in the Boxing Day Test of the 2020/21 series in Melbourne in December last year.

The 33-year-old will be India’s captain in the first Test of the series, with Virat Kohli returning for the second Tests. Gambhir said that he would like to see KL Rahul open with Mayank Agarwal in the absence of Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill batting at Kohli’s No.4 position.

“I am going to open with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul because he opened in England and then probably Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“Plus, Rahane is pretty fortunate that he’s still part of this side because he’s leading… But again he’s got another opportunity now, hopefully, he can make that count,” Gambhir said.

Rahane has struggled to find consistency since his century in Melbourne with questions being raised around whether he would be dropped for India’s final Test against England before the match was eventually postponed.
