India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd ODI: Axar Patel emerges out of the shadows | Cricket News – Times of India

Always believed in his batting potential, says coach Rathour
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For long, Axar Patel has lived under the shadow of Ravindra Jadeja. The two have similar attributes with the bat and ball but Jadeja holds the edge, especially when it comes to fielding. Seen as a like-for-like replacement, Axar has always stepped in to fill the void left by Jadeja.
With Jadeja going through a lengthy injury lay-off, the Gujarat left-arm spin-bowling allrounder has had an extended run with the Indian team and has proved that he is a more than able replacement. In fact, his numbers have vastly improved in the last year, especially in ODIs. Axar claimed 10 wickets at an impressive strike rate of 25. 70 in 8 ODIs and smashed 168 runs at an average of 42. 00 last year. And he has started the new year by translating his ODI success into T20Is against Sri Lanka.
Axar revealed that he looks to be aggressive and looks to dominate the opponents whether he has the bat or ball in his hands. “I enjoy my batting and feel happy when I perform with the bat. The planning is there, but I can’t look to contain the batters. My mindset is to take wickets at all times,” Axar had said recently.
No wonder the team management seems happy with Axar’s allround progress, with batting coach Vikram Rathour waxing eloquent on the Ahmedabad lad. “He has been batting really well this season. He has always been a good player. We have always believed that he has a lot of potential in his batting. That is what he is showing us lately. As a team, it gives us a lot of options,” Rathour said at the pre-match interaction.
Axar has been given a break from the New Zealand series and will rejoin the Men In Blue for the Test series against Australia. Once Jadeja returns to the squad after recovering from his injury, it will be interesting to see how the team management utilizes Axar’s services, given that he has proven to be a match-winner for the team in the shorter formats.
