India will have 31 million 5G subscriptions by 2022 end, 690 million by 2028: Report – Times of India
According to the November Ericsson Mobility Report 2022, 5G will represent around 53% of mobile subscriptions in the region at the end of 2028. The report also notes that India is expected to see a peak in 4G subscriptions (around 930 million) in 2024. The subscriptions are forecast to decline to an estimated 570 million by the year 2028.
Furthermore, smartphone subscriptions in India as a percentage of total mobile subscriptions are expected to grow from 77% in 2022 to 94% in 2028, the report notes.
Nitin Bansal, Head of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for Southeast Asia, Oceania and India, Ericsson, says that 5G will be crucial in achieving India’s digital inclusion goals “especially for bringing broadband to rural and remote homes.”
‘Highest average data traffic per smartphone’
Ericsson’s report mentions that the average data traffic per smartphone in India is the highest globally. It is projected to grow from 25GB per month in 2022 to around 54GB per month in 2028.
Total mobile data traffic in the India region is estimated to grow from 18EB per month in 2022 to 53EB per month in 2028.
Ericsson partners with Jio, Airtel for 5G
Last month, Ericsson announced that it has entered into a long-term strategic 5G contract with Reliance Jio to roll out 5G Standalone (SA) in the country. This is the first partnership between Jio and Ericsson for radio access network deployment in the country.
The Swedish telecommunications company will deploy its “energy-efficient” 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions and E-band microwave mobile transport solutions in the 5G network for Jio.
In August, Ericsson and Airtel entered into a partnership with the Indian telecom giant awarding its first 5G contract in the country to the company. “Ericsson will provide 5G connectivity in 12 circles (geographical regions in India) for Bharti Airtel,” the company said in a statement.
Airtel 5G Plus services are now available in 12 Indian cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Guwahati, Panipat, Pune, Nagpur, Varanasi, and Gurugram. It is also available at several airports across the country.
Global outlook of 5G subscriptions
Global 5G subscriptions are expected to top one billion by the end of this year two years faster than 4G did, following its launch. 5G subscriptions are also forecast to reach five billion by the end of 2028, Ericsson report said.
About 110 million 5G subscriptions were added globally between July-September 2022, bringing the number to about 870 million.
