In the premiere episode of India’s VFX Revolution series from IGN India, we took a look at how VFX brought S.S. Rajamouli’s epic vision to life in RRR.
With the series’ second episode, we turn back the clocks to 2011, as we shed more light on the hit sci-fi Bollywood film, Ra.One. Starring the one and only Shah Rukh Khan, the film was widely regarded as the first major VFX-heavy project in Indian cinema.
In the episode, IGN India talked to Red Chillies.VFX Creative Director Harry Hingorani and COO Keitan Yadav. The VFX studio, founded in 2006, comes under the Red Chilies Entertainment banner, which was established by Shah Rukh Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan.
The film follows the battle between two video game characters outside the virtual world. While Shah Rukh Khan played the protagonist G.One, the aptly named antagonist and titular character, Ra.One, was portrayed by Arjun Rampal.
As the first VFX project from Red Chillies.VFX, Ra.One had received praise for its visual effects and action sequences. The film even won a National Award for Best Visual Effects in 2012.
In the episode, Hingorani and Yadav detail the studio’s origins, and Shah Rukh Khan’s visions for a VFX studio that can bring his extravagant ideas to the screen. The interview details more on the characters, their suits, and more. In regard to sequences, the duo also talk more about the iconic train chase sequence involving Khan’s G.One.
Hingorani and Yadav also talk about the use of miniatures in the film. Furthermore, they also detail the film’s tie-in with the Ra.One video game, which released for the PlayStation 2 and 3.
