Instagram: Instagram will allow users to download Reels but there’s a catch – Times of India
“We’re rolling out the ability to download reels shared by public accounts to your camera roll.Just tap the Share icon on a reel you love and select Download,” Instagram’s headAdam Mosseri said in his channel on the platform.
However, Instagrammers cannot download all Reels they like. Reels shared by private accounts can’t be downloaded. It is to be noted that if your friend has shared a Reel from a private account that you do not follow, you will not be able to access that particular Reel.Furthermore, public accounts can turn off the ability for their followers to download their Reels in Account Settings. Thirdly, the feature is currently being rolled out in the US and there is no information on whether and when it will be available in other markets, like India.
Watermarking like TikTok, YouTube Shorts
TikTok, the direct competitor of the Instagram app, already allows users to download videos. However, there is a watermark on those short clips.
Similarly, downloaded Shorts from YouTube Studio will get a watermark so that viewers can see that the content which is being shared across platforms can be found on YouTube Shorts.
There is no information on whether there will be a similar case with Instagram. The platform already discourages recommending videos that have a watermark on them.
Why Reels are important for Meta
Reels are proving to be the new cash cow for the Facebook parent company Meta. Earlier this year, the company CEO Mark Zuckerberg credited higher engagement in Reels as one of the factors that impacted some part of a 3% year-on-year revenue growth in the first quarter of 2023. This was big news for the company because it reversed three consecutive quarters of revenue decline.
