Instagram introduces ‘take a break’ and ‘nudge’ features for teens – Smartprix

Facebook’s popular social media platform Instagram will introduce a couple of new ways to push teenagers away from harmful content called “take a break” and “nudge. Facebook’s vice president for global affairs Nick Clegg announced these new features in an interview with CNN on Sunday. According to him, these new measures steer teenagers away from harmful content.

In an attempt to keep teens away from content that may affect their mental health, Instagram plans to encourage teens to take a break from using the app. A week after Facebook whistle-blower Frances Haugen revealed that Instagram is the worst social media app for teens, the new features were announced. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Facebook knew Instagram was harmful to teens.

What Facebook plans to do is to detect when a teen is looking at the same content over and over again and if that content “may not be conducive to their well-being” then it will nudge them to look over other content.

Teens will still be able to decide what content they want to see on Instagram since this is only a nudge and not necessarily a forced refresh of the feed.

Teenagers can also take a break from Instagram using Facebook’s planning feature. Instagram just shows this prompt when it’s time to take a break from the app. It’s up to the user how they decide to use this feature. It will be interesting to see if this feature has any impact on Instagram’s most active users. According to an analysis by Forbes found that almost an hour every day is spent on Instagram by US Gen Z users.
