Intel: Intel’s power-efficient Sierra Forest chip may arrive by H1 2024: Report – Times of India
In a statement made ahead of an investor event, Intel Data Center and AI Group head, Sandra Rivera said, “It’s been a challenging few years as we had introduced a lot of innovation but also a lot of complexity and our product release dates had pushed out.”
Intel’s market domination
Tech research firm IDC has claimed that Intel still dominates the markets for PC and server processing chips. The company has a market share of more than 70% even after seeing a collapse. In 2017, Intel had a market share of more than 90%.
Sapphire Rapids delays helped AMD
Sapphire Rapids which is the company’s most powerful fourth-generation Xeon processor for data centres faced some delays. This helped Intel’s rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) to catch up.
However, this time Intel seems to be on track. Rivera noted that the company’s “roadmap is on track” and was “hitting all of our key engineering milestones”.
She also added that Intel’s fifth-generation Xeon processor, Emerald Rapids, is set to arrive by the end of 2023. Rivera even mentioned that the company’s next-generation Granite Rapids is currently being tested by the customers. Intel is on track to deliver this processor by 2024 after launching the Sierra Forest.
Intel has also confirmed that its next power-efficient chip, Clearwater Forest, is expected to arrive on the market by 2025.
Intel Developer Cloud on the way
Intel is also developing the Intel Developer Cloud, Rivera added. This platform for artificial intelligence (AI) will be powered by 256 Xeon chips and 512 Gaudi chips.
The Intel Developer Cloud platform will be available for AI developers to train and run new models. Rivera noted that these Intel chips are already being used by AI startups Hugging Face and Stable Diffusion.
