Apple announced some major changes coming to its operating systems during the main keynote of WWDC22. iPadOS 16 will feature resizable app windows on M1 iPads, while macOS Ventura will get more streamlined and simplified UI components. However, it looks like iOS 16 will be getting more interesting updates. With the addition of widget functionality and sophisticated customizations, the iPhone Lock Screen is getting a complete revamp. This update is all about giving users options, and these personalizations will go beyond just the Lock Screen. Apple Pay is also now available in Chrome, Edge, and essentially every other online browser for iOS 16 beta users. This feature is still limited to only Safari on iOS 15 and earlier versions.

Steve Moser pointed out the same on Twitter, noting that Apple Pay is no longer restricted to Safari on iOS 16. The underlying WebKit changes are probably what led to this feature. The WebKit engine is required to be used by all iPhone web browsers. Therefore, any changes Apple makes to it have an impact on all iPhone web browsers.
It works differently on the Mac where Apple doesn’t compel web browser makers to use WebKit.
This may be the reason why non-Safari users are still unable to utilise Apple Pay, even on the most recent macOS Ventura beta build. Whether this will change in the future is still up in the air.
It’s great to see Apple Pay compatibility added to third-party iPhone browsers. iOS 16 users won’t need to switch between Chrome and Safari only to finish an online transaction. The modification might also aid the Cupertino company in avoiding a few antitrust cases.
