iPhone 14 crash detection feature informs police about accident that kills 6 in the US: Report – Times of India

While the police did not explicitly say that it was an iPhone 14 that contacted the responders, the explanation suggests that it was likely the iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature that got triggered soon after the crash.
The feature has received mixed responses from those who have attempted to test the feature under safer conditions. Multiple reports suggested that the feature does not work as it was advertised by Apple during its “Far Out’ launch event last month. A video from the Wall Street Journal showed a demolition derby driver repeatedly rammed two distinct cars. He had an iPhone 14 model but the handset didn’t detect any of the impacts.
On the contrary, YouTuber TechRax also went ahead to crash a car to test the feature and reported that the feature works in perfect harmony as Apple claims it. He said that the crash activated an emergency SOS countdown suggesting the Crash Detection feature works on iPhone 14. The countdown was cancelled by the team before it could call the emergency services.
iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature’s success heavily relies on the responders. In countries like India, it could face operational challenges after the SOS communication is done. Questions such as, “do we have a sound responder system that dispatches a unit as fast as it is done in other countries,” need answers.
