IPL 2021: Credit to RCB for allowing Glenn Maxwell play with freedom, says Parthiv Patel
Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel said Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) deserve a pat on their back for allowing Glenn Maxwell to flourish at their franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.
RCB showed faith in Glenn Maxwell despite the Australian all-rounder’s poor run of form in the recent years in the IPL. Notably, Maxwell had hit just 108 runs in 13 matches for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2020 wherein he did not register a single six.
However, RCB went behind Maxwell aggressively in the IPL 2021 auction, spending Rs 14.5 crore to bring the all-rounder to Bengaluru. Maxwell repaid the faith shown in him by showcasing consistency in the middle-order for RCB. He hit 223 runs, including 2 fifties, in just 7 matches before IPL was suspended in May. Maxwell struck at 144.80, providing firepower in the middle-order which also had AB de Villiers.
Stressing that Maxwell is someone who likes to play with freedom, Parthiv Patel lauded RCB for the way they managed Maxwell in the first leg of IPL 2021.
“The fact we’ve got a lot of guys going over for the IPL as a preparation, get a few games in those conditions, it’s going to do wonders for our batters. Our bowlers are going to be up and firing by the time the tournament starts,” he told the ICC.
“I think there are certain players; they flourish in a certain atmosphere. I think, sometimes, you do not put a lot of pressure on them; you just allow that player to be what they are, and sometimes that makes a big difference to the player psyche,” Parthiv told Star Sports Game Plan.
“I think you will have to give a pat on the back to RCB’s management here. Glenn Maxwell, we all know what he could do, but then to allow him to be what he is and just be as free as possible. So, you will have to give the credit to RCB’s team management here for allowing him to play the way he wants to.”
Maxwell has arrived in the UAE where he is currently in quarantine. The all-rounder will be hoping to continue the good form for the franchise who are currently placed 3rd in the 8-team points table.
Maxwell will also be an important part of Australia’s T20 World Cup setup. The RCB all-rounder said the former 50-over world champions are confident of a good showing in the UAE despite their poor run of form in international T20Is this year. Notably, Australia have managed to win only 4 of their 15 T20Is in 2021.
