IPL 2022 Auction: Ishan Kishan costliest, 8 Indians in 10 most expensive buys

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction was a testament to the fact that the franchises are looking more towards home-grown talents than foreign stars, something that was not the case when the league began in 2008 with most teams splashing the cash on big overseas names.

At the IPL 2022 auction, as many as 8 players from India were among the 10 most expensive buys in Bengaluru. 204 players were sold and Rs 551.70 crore were spent over 2 days at the mega auction and it was the local heroes who attracted big bids.

India’s wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was the most expensive player at the IPL 2022 mega auction with Mumbai Indians breaking the bank to get him for Rs 15.25 crore. He became the 2nd most expensive Indian player at an auction after Yuvraj Singh (Rs 16 crore) in 2015.

Meanwhile, Deepak Chahar’s services was secured by Chennai Super Kings once again as he got a whopping sum of Rs14 crore. He became the most expensive Indian fast bowler at an auction ever.

Meanwhile, CSK and MI spent more than Rs 10 crore on a player for the first time in their auction history as they got Chahar and Ishan back.

Meanwhile, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer went to Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 12.25 crore after deciding to not get retained by Delhi Capitals. The former Delhi captain is likely to lead KKR in the upcoming season.

England’s big-hitter Liam Livingstone is the only overseas player in the top 5 most expensive buys at the IPL 2022 auction. Punjab KIngs bought him for Rs 11.50 crore. Notably, Livingstone was picked by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 auction for Rs 75 lakh.

Shardul Thakur, the Indian all-rounder, completed the top 5, selling to the Delhi Capitals for Rs 10.75 crore.

Fast bowler Avesh Khan, who is not far away from making his India debut, was sold for a whopping sum of Rs 10 crore to Lucknow Super Giants. He is the most expensive uncapped player in the history of the auction.

Shahrukh Khan, the Tamil Nadu big-hitter, was bought back by Punjab Kings for Rs 9 crore.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans paid Rs 9 crore to secure the services of all-rounder Rahul Tewatia.
